Digital terrestrial radio (DAB, DAB+) pilots

The first pilot DAB transmission was started by Hungarian Radio and Antenna Hungária on December 1, 1995 on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of birth of the Hungarian radio broadcasting. The pilot DAB system offered the possibility to transmit eight radio programs, of which four were used by Hungarian Radio for the purposes of broadcasting Kossuth, Petőfi, Bartók Radio and Classic+. In addition to the programs, program accompanying information could also be found (Programme Associated Data, PAD). Transmission took place in Budapest using two transmitters (at Széchenyi Hill station and in Száva street). The pilot DAB multiplex was extended by Danubius and Sláger channels in September, 2008.

The National Communications Authority put out a tender call in the spring of 2008 for the operation of five terrestrial digital television networks and one terrestrial radio broadcasting network and Antenna Hungária won both orders for such services. On 5 September 2008 the National Communications Authority (NHH) and Antenna Hungária signed the contracts concerning right to operate the digital terrestrial television and radio broadcasting networks. According to the authority contract with NHH, Antenna Hungária rolled out the first phase of the digital terrestrial radio network until December 2008 covering nearly 30 per cent of the Hungarian population.

In order to allow the launch of the new DAB+ digital terrestrial radio service in December 2008, the DAB pilot transmission operated by Antenna Hungária since 1995 discontinued on October 31, 2008. Following that, the company started a test transmission on its DAB+ digital terrestrial radio network, the trial is available from January 23, 2009 in Budapest and its surroundings.

Beside the actually offered channels, from the beginning until January 3, 2011, it could be heard on the platform the three programs of Swiss Satellite Radio (Swiss Jazz, Swiss Classic és Swiss Pop), from March 2009 the Gazdasági Rádió, from April the radiocafé, then from October the program of Juventus Radio. Altogether – between February 2010 and January 2011 – 13 channels could be heard on the Hungarian DAB+ platform.

From June 1st, 2011 NEO FM was the first radio station who signed a commercial contract with Antenna Hungária Co. for radio program broadcasting not only on the analogue radio system (and on DVB-T network) but on the Hungarian DAB+ system, as well.
The radio program could be listened on the national digital radio system until November 9th, 2012.
